MRI Results - Not ideal! The start of Baclofen
Saw Dr Reece in person to discuss the neck MRI results...
Dr Reece explained there were 3 things wrong...
1) I forgot already; and
2) An overall sprain (no surprise there after 4 weeks in a seized state); and
3) I had a bone in my neck spine protruding into my spinal chord.
He was a little bit concerned (doesn't happen often so I knew it was serious). He explained it like this:
=> Pretend your spinal cord is a stick, and if you put hands on either side of that stick and smack it over your knee, you break the stick...
=> In this case my spinal cord (stick) was resting on a protruded part of my neck spine (knee)...
=> Seems the 4 weeks of muscle spasms/seized impacted my bone to go into my cord.
=> His concern was another spasm could cause the knee (protruding bone) to break the stick (spinal cord) ... with devastating impacts.
He said if this was his MRI he would want to see only one person about it. He rang a neurosurgeon (Gert Tollesson) right there and then on his mobile and discussed my case. The neurosurgeon said to get all my info over to him and he'd review that night. Then have his team book me in.
They agreed in the interim I needed to start the SPS treatment Baclofen (starting on a low dose and gradually increasing to 30mg over a couple weeks) to help stop any future spasms until he could assess my situation.
I was to start this medication on 5mg with a friend present in case of any adverse reaction. I was pretty happy one of my longest and dearest friends Danielle and her kids were flying in tomorrow to spend a few days helping me out.... so now the perfect way to kick this off.
Dan and the kids arrived. I brought her up to speed. We decided to have a nice lunch before potentially ruining their holiday!
Incredibly, within the hour, my legs unseized from their rigid concrete like state..... first time in 7 years. It was the most INCREDIBLE feeling!!!! I forgot all about my neck for a little while :-)
We went on to have a lovely few days together, very unexpected to be feeling this well all of a sudden. I'll be forever grateful for Dan cooking up a storm to fill my freezer for what was to come next. xx
[Side note - do you think the people doing your MRI review the reason you are there for the scan, and then choose the play list to suit???
They fully strapped down, cage around my head to keep my neck still, plug the ear plugs and roll me into the MRI machine. Then the music starts. Today it kicks off with Elton John, I'm still standing. I had to use all of my inner control to not laugh. Then reminisce Mick having his first ever one to Johnny Cash, Ring of Fire. Again try not to laugh. Then spend the next half hour pondering this... and the irony that they put ear plugs in to remove the banging noises of the machine, but turn music on, which you can hear through the plugs, when the banging is not too loud haha]
